Advancing Propane Technologies: PERC’s Alternative Technology Demonstration & Research Program

The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) has officially launched the Alternative Technology Demonstration & Research Program as of January 1, 2025. This groundbreaking initiative is designed to accelerate innovation in propane-powered technologies for commercial applications, enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability.

Why Propane?

With increasing electricity costs and reliability concerns, commercial and industrial businesses must seek affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy alternatives. Propane offers a compelling solution, delivering lower energy costs, enhanced comfort, and exceptional dependability.

How the Program Works

The Alternative Technology Demonstration & Research Program allows businesses to earn financial incentives by installing and providing operational data on propane-powered cooling systems and combined heat & power (CHP) systems.

Eligible participants will track and submit key performance metrics such as:

  • Energy savings
  • Run hours
  • Cost efficiency
  • Gallon usage
  • Emissions data

This program benefits not just the participants, but also the entire propane technology ecosystem by generating valuable insights that will shape the future of energy solutions.

Available Incentives

Propane Combined Heat & Power (CHP) Systems

  • $12,000 for systems under 15 kW (Ideal for small businesses, medical clinics, server rooms, and restaurants)
  • $30,000 for systems 15 kW and above (Best for large-scale commercial, multifamily, industrial, and educational facilities, as well as hotels and data centers)

Propane Cooling Equipment

  • $300 per ton of installed cooling capacity
  • Suitable for light, commercial, and heavy-duty applications, including server rooms, educational institutions, and large commercial spaces

Eligibility Requirements

To participate, businesses must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S.-based commercial business
  • Be at least 18 years old and provide a W-9 tax form
  • Be an active propane customer in good standing with their fuel supplier
  • Install certified propane equipment (CSA, UL, ETL) at a commercial facility
  • Provide data on equipment performance, emissions, energy savings, and costs
  • Be open to scheduled site visits from PERC representatives
  • PERC will select candidates based on data collection capabilities, location, business type, and propane consumption levels. Meeting all eligibility requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
